<p>Cannes Classics est créée dans le cadre du <a href="Festival_de_Cannes_2004" title="Festival de Cannes 2004">festival de Cannes 2004</a> à l'initiative de <a href="Thierry_Fr%C3%A9maux" title="Thierry Frémaux">Thierry Frémaux</a> qui occupe alors le poste de délégué artistique du festival.

</p><p>La section répond à la volonté de valorisation, à côté du cinéma en train de se faire, des films plus anciens que ceux présentés en compétition en donnant une autre dimension à l'ambition de promotion que s'est fixée le Festival<sup id="cite_ref-2" class="reference"><a href="#cite_note-2"><span class="cite-bracket">[</span>2<span class="cite-bracket">]</span></a></sup>.

</p><p>Elle présente à l'origine, dans deux catégories, « hommage » et « copies restaurées », des hommages et des documentaires sur des films et des personnalités du cinéma pour la première et des films du patrimoine cinématographique international dans des copies restaurées pour la seconde<sup id="cite_ref-3" class="reference"><a href="#cite_note-3"><span class="cite-bracket">[</span>3<span class="cite-bracket">]</span></a></sup>. Elle s'enrichit au fil du temps et présente de nouveaux thèmes selon les années et les événements<sup id="cite_ref-4" class="reference"><a href="#cite_note-4"><span class="cite-bracket">[</span>4<span class="cite-bracket">]</span></a></sup>.

</p><p>La projection des films et documentaires est assurée en journée et parfois en début de soirée et répartie dans les trois salles Claude-Debussy, Luis-Buñuel et Agnès-Varda du <a href="Palais_des_festivals_et_des_congr%C3%A8s_de_Cannes" title="Palais des festivals et des congrès de Cannes">Palais des festivals</a><sup id="cite_ref-5" class="reference"><a href="#cite_note-5"><span class="cite-bracket">[</span>5<span class="cite-bracket">]</span></a></sup><sup class="reference cite_virgule">,</sup><sup id="cite_ref-6" class="reference"><a href="#cite_note-6"><span class="cite-bracket">[</span>6<span class="cite-bracket">]</span></a></sup> accessibles sur accréditation<sup id="cite_ref-7" class="reference"><a href="#cite_note-7"><span class="cite-bracket">[</span>7<span class="cite-bracket">]</span></a></sup>.
